Julie Wall Brilliant insight from Lynne Smith "Dog fighting is flourishing because it is easier to do, and it is easier to do when pit bulls are commonplace and accepted. They used to stick out like sore thumbs and invite the suspicion of fighting. After 30 years of pushing the idea that just because you own or breed a pit bull doesn't mean you are a dog fighter has paid off for dog fighters."

Inside look into dog fighting. Dog man: "He says you don't train a pit bull to fight because they're bred that way." "You can't teach a pit bull how to fight," he said. "Any dog man would tell you that is animal cruelty."
We've been warned. Dogs are being stolen in New Mexico and possibly used in dogfighting rings. It's frightening to think it could happen to your beloved pet.

  • Cindy Lorenz True, good article. With the exception of hog dogs, but if the Pit has an expensive kevlar vest & a GPS collar, you know it's not a fighting dog (I have no problem with catch dogs, as I've never known one to cause a problem)
  • Valerie Webber"They live their lives breeding purebred pit bulls – AKC certified – and placing them in fights for big-time profits." This part does not make sense. AKC certification is not an indicator that a dog is, or will be, a good pit fighter. In fact, the opposite is generally the case. The AmStaff is a watered down less aggressive, less game version of a Pit Bull whose physique is nowhere near as conducive to fighting in a pit as a gamebred Pit Bull.
  • Cindy LorenzI used to go to a lot of dogshows ( I competed in obedience) The AmStaffs I've met at shows were bred for looks & if a dog causes any trouble in an AKC ring, the dog is banned! Never seen a fight in the ring when the Amstaffs are being shown. And never had a problem with any of them. Now the obedience ring is a different story! Many dogs (including my own) are from shelters & have unknown backgrounds. VERY unpredictable!
  • Cindy Lorenz I don't entirely trust an AKC dog, but the show dogs are usually under the tight supervision of professional handlers & are not running loose. Their limited exposure to the public could account for their lack of problems. Conformation dogs are usually shown every weekend & in transport in between shows- not at dog parks or running loose in the neighborhood.
  • Gini Barrett The AKC does not recognize pit bulls as a breed. The UKC does. My guess is that this man does not know the difference. The reality is that protecting pit breeders - of all types - protects dog fighting.
  • Jeffrey Sloan AKC-registered amstaffs can be registered with the UKC as apbts - so it's the same dog, just different names
  • Thomas McCartney Saying a amstaff is any different or softer in nature then an American pit bull terrier is simply not credible nor born out by the realities of everyday life on the public street.
  • Thomas McCartney The are 6 of one half a dozen of another.!
  • Cindy Lorenz Not saying they are "soft" but most fighters wouldn't waste their time with an AKC dog that was bred for the show ring. They might use one for a bait dog.
  • Valerie WebberAmStaffs are bred for show, scars would cost them in the ring. Show Irish Setters and field Irish Setters are the same breed registered in the same registries, both can hunt, but the field Setter shames the showline in the field and with natural abilities. Dual champions are rare. Same can be said of countless other hunting breeds and guard type dogs such as Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds. The UKC no longer registers AmStaffs as Pit Bulls stating that the two breeds have diverged to the point of not being the same breed.
  • Thomas McCartneyAmerican Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire bull terriers, American pit bull terriers, are ALL pit bull type dogs with the same genetic makeup and outcome, DEATH, one is the same as the other, while Boxers, Frenchies and Bostons do NOT have a historical derivation from the Old English Bulldog which prior to it traces back to the Roman Alaunt fighting dog which then traces strictly through the old English bulldog into the terrier and pit bull terrier and into offshoots that are the pit bull type dogs such as American Bulldog, Bull mastiffs, dogo argentinos, fila brasieros, presa canarios, Japanese Tosa, cane corsos and some others and their mixes.

All Pit Bull type dogs that ARE killer dogs are all alaunt derived.
To say otherwise is to say that old grey pit bulls are dangerous and that tan ones are not.

But THEY were not subsequently then crossed with the old english bulldog which is what creates the pit bull type dog and qualifies their inclusion.

If one can not agree on that that one is essentially saying that only a show papered pure breed pit bull terrier which in reality doesn't even exist is the only threat
To say otherwise is to parrot the old all pit bull mixes are just Mutts and indiscernible from each other.
It is all or nothing, otherwise in effect you are plugging 5 of the 8 holes in the dike but will still drown in the flood caused by the 3 unplugged ones, in this case you will end up drowning in your own blood.!!

Only because they include the caveat i mentioned so as to preclude anyone from simply switching over to the other pit bull type dogs i mentioned.

In the UK and Oz that was not needed as the Staffies were allowed so the other pit bull type dogs were somewhat moot as a result.

Rubbish they have the same general pit bull type dog look and more to the point the same genetics which will result in the same outcome if the pit bull owners are allowed to switch from the 3 main breeds to them with impunity.

The data of the pit bull type dog is clear that they present an ever present danger.

the line is drawn at pit bull genetics and derivation where there is a mutual connection along said parameters.I have already outlined all that in connection to the pit bull type dogs i have mentioned.

If you do not include all pit bull type dogs you are creating a slippery slope that is unclimbable due to all the blood on it.!
